President Donald Trump put the entire United States in a frenzy yesterday, as people and government officials from both political parties condemned Trump for going easy on Russian President Vladimir Putin at the news conference in Helsinki. Here’s one statement of many:

In a seemingly calm tone, Trump addressed everyone’s concerns today by claiming he simply misspoke, saying he actually trusted U.S. intelligence agencies claims of Russia tampering in the 2016 U.S. election.

Whether or not you believe Trump made an honest mistake is up to you. But his typical double-down nature on controversial claims wasn’t present here, and some worry U.S. democracy may be threatened again in the future.
